The Congress party is facing rebellion within in almost all states, as
disgruntled senior leaders are raising banner of revolt against the
ineptitude of the party high command to quell internal feuds. In a
clear sign of disgruntlement, former Chief Minister of Uttarakhand
Harish Rawat voiced his differences with the party high command saying
his “hands and legs are being tied” by the party leadership. But his
critics say that such utterances were a clever ploy by the senior
Congressmen to arm-twist the leadership to have a major say in ticket
distribution for the upcoming assembly election.
Meanwhile, former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh took a
dig at Rawat. Amarinder Singh nurses a grudge against Rawat as
in-charge of party affairs in Punjab, Rawat had put his weight behind
Singh’s rivals which led to latter’s resignation as the chief
minister. Taking to Twitter, Singh reacted to a series of Rawat’s
tweets and said, “You reap what you sow! All the best for your future
endeavours (if there are any) Harish Rawat ji.”
The former Punjab CM had in November this year in a letter to Congress
President Sonia Gandhi slammed Rawat terming him as “perhaps the most
dubious individual” he had the occasion to make acquaintance with.
Harish Rawat through his tweets on Wednesday, had expressed anguish at
the factionalism in the state unit and noted that thought has been
crossing his mind that “it is time to rest”.
“Isn’t it strange, one has to swim in the sea in the form of the
forthcoming electoral battle, instead of cooperation, the
organisational structure at most places is turning its face away or is
playing a negative role,” Rawat had tweeted.
“There are many crocodiles of the ruling dispensation. On whose
directions one has to swim, their nominees are tying my hands and
feet,” he added.
Rawat further cited lines of the Gita, and said, “And then quietly in
a corner of the mind, a voice is erupting, ‘na denyam, na palaynam’
(one who does not bow or flee). Perhaps the new year will show the
way. I have faith that Lord Kedarnath will provide me guidance in this
situation.”
Meanwhile, in Assam, Congress MLA Shashikant Das met the Chief
Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on December 22. State BJP president
Bhabesh Kalita was also present in the meeting. The meeting set of
rumours that the Congress leader might join the saffron party.
Das told the media that he was impressed by the development work of
the BJP government in Assam. He lavished praise on the chief minister
who, according to Das, was fulfilling all the promises made during the
last election campaign. Shashikant Das said he will support the state
government’s development agenda and will be with the government for
development.
