Another case of molestation of a minor girl has come to light from Uttar Pradesh’s Pihani area of Hardoi district, as a man identified as Mohammad Afzal was arrested by local police on charges harassing the girl, when she was returning from Ganesh idol immersion program, recently.
The police are reported to have confirmed that the accused was injured in an encounter with cops after he tried to flee from custody. When the locals came to know about the incident, they caught Afzal and handed him over to the police, the police said.
According to the Police, the incident took place when the accused was being taken to the magistrate in Shahabad and the police slowed down the vehicle due to some stray animals on the road.
Taking advantage of the situation, Afzal snatched a police revolver and tried to escape, the personnel escorting him managed to take him down, but in cross-firing, the accused was injured, they said, adding that he was then taken to a community health center in Shahabad for treatment.
Keshav Chand Goswami, SP, Hardoi is reported to have said, “A case of molestation has come to light in the Pihani area, where the victim attempted suicide. She is undergoing treatment in Lucknow. We arrested the accused, and while we were taking him to the magistrate, he snatched a police revolver and tried to escape. When we followed him, he fired at us, and we retaliated in self-defence. The accused was injured in the firing and is currently undergoing treatment in the district hospital.”
Accused Afzal, reportedly, harassed the minor girl on September 25, 2023, as she was returning home from a Ganesh immersion program. Afzaal is a resident of Bhatan Tola locality in Pihani.
The traumatic harassment incident deeply affected the victim, leading her to attempt suicide by hanging. But fortunately, her family members rescued her in a critical condition and swiftly rushed her to the hospital. She was subsequently referred to Lucknow for better medical care. At present, the victim is reported to be in stable condition.
Meanwhile, members of the victim’s family urged the authorities to ensure stringent action against Afzal, so that others could never think of doing such an act.
