A Swedish national had a harrowing time in Kerala when overenthusiastic policemen stopped him for checking his bag. Stephen Asburg who has been putting up in a Kovalam hotel was stopped by a group of policemen who searched his bag. When Stephen showed liquor bottles he purchased from state-run beverage outlet, the policemen asked for bills. He told them that he forgot to get the bill.
Told by policemen that he cannot allow him to take the bottles without a bill, he got angry and emptied contents of three bottles. Realising that someone was recording it, the policemen suggested the foreign national not to empty the bottle and get the bill from the outlet.
According to reports, Stephen went and collected the bill. But the incident was reported widely in the media which triggered public outrage. The Chief Minister sought a report from the state police chief. After investigation, grade SI of Kovalam police station was suspended.
