In view of sanctions imposed on Russia by Western nations, including the United States, the Russian administration has issued anti-hoarding and price control measures.
As part of this, the government has directed retailers to limit the sale of essential food items. The new proposal is aimed at curbing black market sales and ensuring support prices.
There were reports that many were buying and stockpiling more food than they needed. The Ministry of Industry and Trade said it is doubtful whether it is aimed at a subsequent resale.
The ministry said trade unions had suggested that retailers be allowed to restrict the volume of goods sold to individuals. Restricted essentials include bread, rice, flour, eggs, some meats, and dairy products.
Russia has taken stringent action, including in the economic sector, following tough sanctions imposed by the world community.
