The West Bengal Assembly today adopted a resolution demanding repealing of Citizenship Amendment Act and withdrawal of National Population Registrar (NPR) and National Register of Citizenship (NRC).
The House urged the State Government to take up these issues with the Central Government for necessary steps. Speaking on the resolution, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee urged the Opposition political parties for being united to take up the challenges against the activities of BJP-led Government at the Centre.
She said that National Population Register and National Register of Citizens are related with each other and have no connection with census. The Chief Minister alleged that CAA, NRC and NPR are against the tradition of secular character of the country and her government will not allow implement these in West Bengal. Ms Banerjee said that she will fight the battle against BJP for these politically. The Opposition Congress and Left Front also supported the resolution.
BJP Member Swadhin Sarkar opposed the resolution in the house. Mr. Sarkar said that the Central Government has done the Citizenship Amendment Act to help refugees get their citizenship of the country. The State Assembly had also passed a resolution against NRC in September last year.
