In the incident where an 11-year-old girl died without getting treatment due to fever in Naluva in Kannur, her father and a Madrasa teacher who practised witchcraft were arrested. A case has been registered against them on charges of involuntary manslaughter. The police investigation found that the child was given water chanting verses from Quran instead of availing medical treatment.
Abdul Sattar, father of the deceased Fatima, and Uwais, who practiced witchcraft, were arrested. Earlier, it was reported that three other members of the family had died in similar circumstances. Police said they would also investigate the matter. The arrest was made following a complaint by relatives that the child had not been treated.
Relatives and neighbors said the girl, who was suffering from fever, was forced to attend a witchcraft treatment. They also say the child was beaten as part of treatment. The postmortem report stated that the baby died due to a lung infection. The Child Rights Commission has also registered a case in the incident.
