The Indian Meteorological Department has alerted that a low pressure area which has formed over southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining south Andaman Sea is likely to get intensified into a cyclonic storm Umpun by May 16. Though Kerala may not be directly influenced from the cyclonic storm, it is forecast that the state will receive heavy rainfall till May 17 under its influence. Lightning and strong wind will accompany rain in the state.
In view of the weather forecast, an yellow alert was issued to various districts in Kerala.
An yellow alert is issued for Idukki and Malappuram district on Thursday. At the same time, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur and Palakkkad districts are also placed under yellow alert on Friday. Ernakulam, Idukki and Palakkad will continue to remain under yellow alert on Saturday. An yellow alert is issued for Alappuzha district on Saturday along with other three districts.
As per the IMD warning, the low pressure area over Bay of Bengal and south Andaman Sea is likely to intensify on Friday and turn into a cyclonic storm by Saturday evening.
“It is very likely to move northwestwards initially till 17th May and then re-curve northeastwards. In association with the above system, the conditions will become favourable for advance of southwest monsoon over South Bay of Bengal, Andaman Sea and Andaman and Nicobar Islands around Saturday,” reads the IMD press release.
Squally winds, speed reaching 40-50 kmph is likely to prevail over Kerala and Lakshadweep coasts. Hence, the fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea in these places from Friday.
Sea condition will be very rough in Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea on Friday and Sunday. Fishermen who are out at sea over these regions are advised to return to coasts by Friday.
