The novel coronavirus has claimed more than 2 lakh lives globally since its outbreak in December 2019 in China. More than 28 lakh 64 thoudsand cases were registered in 193 countries and territories. Of these cases, over 7 lakh 72 thousand are now considered recovered.
The United States, the country which has been worst affected by the deadly novel coronavirus with a total of 936,616 confirmed cases, on Saturday recorded 2,494 deaths in 24 hours, taking the total death toll in the country to 53,694.
Britain’s COVID-19 death toll passed 20,000 on Saturday in what the interior minister called “a tragic and terrible milestone” as she urged people to stay at home. The government is facing growing criticism over its response to the new coronavirus pandemic as the death toll rises.
Britain was slower to impose a lockdown than European peers and is struggling to raise its testing capacity.
Meanwhile, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson will return to work Monday after recovering from coronavirus, according to Downing Street.
Johnson has been convalescing at Chequers, the prime minister’s country estate, since he was discharged from hospital earlier this month. Dominic Raab, the U.K. foreign secretary, has stood in for Johnson during his absence.
Johnson, who tested positive for the virus in late March, initially said he had mild symptoms. He was admitted to hospital in early April and subsequently placed in intensive care for three days after his condition deteriorated.
