The Congress on Saturday managed to put up good show at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan, where all its top leaders were present in full strength. Although the BJP dismissed the crowd as ‘hired’, the enthusiasm of the crowd was unmissable.
The crowd received Sonia Gandhi’s speech with much enthusiasm. Several party workers dressed as degree holders were seen selling pakodas and tea in an apparent dig at the central government over its failure to provide jobs. Many wore wind-cheaters with the slogan ‘Modi hai to mandi hai’ inscribed on them. Several Congress workers also wore onion garlands around their necks to register protest over the vegetable’s sky-rocketing price.
Sonia Gandhi and Priyanka lashed out at the Centre for not honouring promises made during the elections. Big hoardings of the ‘family’ greeted crowds ‘brought in from Rajasthan and Haryana in buses’.
Many Congress activists wore the dress meant to be worn on the convocation day to mock at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah over rising unemployment, and sold tea and ‘pakodas’ near the rally venue.
Many party workers protested against the central government over the steep rise in prices and wore paper hats with image of gas cylinder with its price of Rs 885 written on them.
Many danced on drum beats and lyrics describing the failure of the Modi government in the last six years.
When Priyanka Gandhi begun her address the crowd went into tizzy and raised slogans. They clapped when Priyanka slammed the BJP over its slogan ‘Modi hai to mumkin hai’ (With Modi everything is possible).
The ecstatic crowd completed Priyanka’s every sentence, like “Modi hai to unemployment at 45-year high, Modi hai to Indian Railways privatised, Modi hai to Navratna PSU’s being sold, Modi hai to economy is in bad shape, Modi hai 15,000 farmers have committed suicide.”
