Islamist outfit Popular Front and its affiliates have threatened to stop the functioning of the Government Women’s PU College in Udupi after the principal of the college denied permission to girl students to wear hijab inside the classes.
The principal, Prof Rudre Gowda, has said that while students are permitted to wear hijab on the campus, wearing full-body veil inside the classrooms has been banned. According to him, this has been done to promote uniformity, as if one group is allowed to wear, others will also make similar demands.
Ever since Campus Front and SDPI have become active in the area, the communal situation in peaceful Udupi has become vitiated. These Islamist outfits have been mounting pressure on Muslim women to wear hijab.
Meanwhile, local MLA K Raghupati Bhat expressed his desire to talk to Islamist outfits to ask Islamist outfits to refrain from vitiating the communal atmosphere.
