West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar has appealed to the citizens of the State to shun violence and maintain peace. Talking to newspersons at Raj Bhavan in Kolkata this afternoon, Mr Dhankhar also appealed to political parties to maintain restraint. The Governor expressed concern over violent protests and damaging of government property in many parts of the State.
The Governor also requested Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to withdraw the advertisements on non-implementation of the NRC and amended Citizenship Act in the State. He said Government cannot publish such advertisements on any law which has been passed by the Parliament. He termed it as unconstitutional.
Violent protests continued unabated on the third day today in many parts of the State, opposing the Act. Violent incidents were reported from Murshidabad, Birbhum, South 24 Paraganas and Burdwan.
Several local and long distance trains were either cancelled or rescheduled due to blockade on rail tracks. Incidents of arson and road blockade were also reported from many areas. Meanwhile, the State administration has snapped Internet connections in six districts.
