A BJP worker who was assaulted by a group of Trinamool Congress goons for chanting Jai Shri Ram succumbed to his injuries in Nadia district of Bengal on Saturday.
A resident of Swarup Nagar in Nadia, Krishna Debnath was found unconscious on the roadside by his relatives who rushed him to a local hospital on Friday evening. However, after his condition deteriorated he was shifted to Kolkata’s NRS Medical College, where he breathed his last.
Debnath’s death triggered huge outrage in the locality where agitated BJP workers blocked roads and took out demonstrations. Protesters carrying the dead body blocked the roads for hours together.
“Some Muslim Trinamool Congress goons thrashed him for chanting Jai Shri Ram. Is it a crime to chant Ram naam. The police are yet to take any action against those Muslim goons,” said a relative of Debnath.
Bengal BJP chief Dilip Ghosh said TMC has unleashed terror on political rivals. “They beat up BJP workers for chanting Jai Shri Ram. The police have become ineffective and they are arresting BJP workers for no reason,” he added.
According to him, Mamata Banerjee has been claiming that people were being lynched across the country for not chanting ‘Jai Shri Ram’. “In Bengal people are being lynched and put behind bars for chanting Jai Shri Ram,” the BJP leader added.
TMC’s Gram Panchayat president Sirajul Sheikh admitted that Debnath was attacked by a group of people. But he is trying to paint the victim as the villain. “He was a drunkard and misbehaved with some women. Angry with this, some locals assaulted him,” he said.
But Debnath’s relatives dismissed the claim of the TMC leader. They said he was not a drunkard and Muslim goons were upset that he had joined the BJP. “BJP workers are facing attacks every day especially in some localities where TMC is strong. They assault women, destroy houses of BJP workers,” said Deabsish.
