Senior Congress leader and former Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit passed away on Saturday at the Escorts Hospital. She was 81.
Dikshit was admitted to Escorts hospital a few days ago. She died at 3.55 pm. The hospital, in a statement, said Dikshit died of a cardiac arrest.
“A multi-disciplinary team of doctors, led by Dr Ashok Seth, Chairman, Fortis Escorts Heart Institute, carried out the advanced resuscitative measures. Her condition stabilised temporarily. However, she had another cardiac arrest and despite all the resuscitative efforts, passed away at 3:55pm on 20th of July 2019,” Fortis said in a statement.
Dikshit led the Congress in the last general election. The longest serving Chief Minister of Delhi, she was liked by all sections of people for her unique style of administration. She had unsuccessfully contested the Lok Sabha elections from North East Delhi constituency against BJP’s Manoj Tiwari.
Expressing his sadness at the loss, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a tweet, stated: “Blessed with a warm and affable personality, she made a noteworthy contribution to Delhi’s development. Condolences to her family and supporters. Om Shanti.”
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said in a tweet: “I’m devastated to hear about the passing away of Sheila Dikshit Ji, a beloved daughter of the Congress Party, with whom I shared a close personal bond. My condolences to her family & the citizens of Delhi, whom she served selflessly as a 3 term CM, in this time of great grief.”
