Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor is the party’s candidate for Thiruvananthapuram Lok Sabha seat in Kerala, where the BJJP is fielding its former state president and Mizoram ex-governor Kummanam Rajasekharan. The Left Front’s candidate is C Divakaran.
Tharoor, a two-time MP, is facing a tough time as he is embroiled in a controversy involving his derogatory comments about Nair women. Thiruvananthapuram has considerable Nair presence and this time the Nair Service Society has put their weight behind the BJP for its stand on Sabarimala.
Compared to the flamboyance of Tharoor, Rajasekharan comes off as a simple, down-to-earth leader who doesn’t throw his weight around. The main complaint about Tharoor is that he was not accessible to the common man and he had ignored the constituency.
Last time too, Tharoor won on a slender margin.
