A Hindu temple priest was arrested and case filed against him for opening a temple for a few hours on the occasion of Panguni Uthram in Thirunelveli district. The police went to the temple on the complaint of some people and arrested the priest.
However, all other places of worship of Christians and Muslims are allowed to open for devotees, as no one from those communities have been arrested so far.
According to sources, the priest told the police that it was an auspicious occasion and he would close it once the pujas were over. But the police did not heed and arrested the priest.
The arrest has evoked a huge response on the social media, with many people calling for protest.
Recently a small temple was demolished by the local authorities in Tamil Nadu. However, following public outcry, the authorities promise to rebuild the temple.
