A priest who posted a one-line message criticizing the claim of Kerala Devaswom Board Minister Kadakampalli Surendran that a person should abstain from visiting Sabarimala if his close relative passes away on Facebook was suspended by the Devaswom Board. The victim, K Madhavan Namboothiri, chief priest of Kanjangad Madiyan Koolom Kshtrapalaka temple, said what minister said was absurd. The Devaswom Board action triggered protest and resentment against the government. Surendran said he was not aware of the action in his department.
The minister had cut a sorry figure with his comments on the rituals of Sabarimala. “The semi-literate minister is a disgrace to Kerala. In a conclave conducted by a media house in Delhi, he couldn’t utter a word. The people in the audience were making fun of him. His comment on rituals is laughable,” said Rajesh on his Facebook post.
In a similar case, a 70-year-old Mani Amma was arrested and slapped with stringent cases for using a rustic slur on Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan while commenting on the Sabarimala issue. She in another video tendered her apology. Still the police arrested and harassed her. The cyber goons of the CPI(M) made fun of her apology also.
Meanwhile, the police said more than 25,000 Facebook users in the state have been served warning notices so far in the past two months and over two dozen registered in connection with Sabarimala developments, The New Indian Express reported. The government also warned that it would cancel the passports of non-resident Indians if they post anything objectionable (read against government).
