Subhas Chandra Bose won the election of the President of Congress defeating Mahatma Gandhi’s choice of Pattabhi Sitaramayya by a decent margin in 1939. It seems the mood hasn’t changed in the country even today.
Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose continues to be a far more popular leader than Gandhiji. Indus Scrolls approached people, old and young alike, though many refused to be video-graphed, to understand their awareness about Netaji. In the list of questionnaire there wasn’t any question on Gandhiji. Still the common refrain was Netaji was much bigger a leader than Gandhiji.
Youngsters find Netaji more inspirational than Gandhiji. The respondents recognized Gandhiji’s contributions to the Freedom Movement but rated Netaji much above him, which was a revelation for us. “It is true that Gandhiji had brought about unity among Indians but contribution of Netaji was much higher. Ideally he should have been Father of the Nation,” said a respondent. See video
