It goes without saying that all hell would have broken loose if those involved in the pregnant elephant killing in Kerala were Hindus. There is complete silence on the topic in the media and liberal circles ever since it was revealed that the main accused were Abdul Karim, an estate owner, his son Riyazuddin and his servant Wilson. Many allege that servant Wilson has been made a scapegoat in the case.
The main accused Karim and his son, who have been on the run, are associated with the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML). According to BJP leader Sandeep G Varier, Muslim League leaders have allegedly tried to get bail for the accused.
The media in Kerala tried to whip up communal passion which the beleaguered Pinarayi Vijayan government tried to cash in by filing a case against former Union minister Maneka Gandhi for her comments against Malappuram. The state government is under severe criticism over the handling of the Covid crisis.
