A woman civil police officer was set on fire on Saturday by a Muslim colleague near her home in Mavelikkara in Alappuzha district of Kerala.
Soumya Pushpakaran, the victim, was posted at the Vallikunnam station near Mavelikkara. Pushpakaran, whose husband is an NRI, has three children.
The culprit, Ajaz, a resident of Malappuram, who was driving a car hit Pushkaran’s two-wheeler while she was on her way home. When she fell down, he hacked her couple of times with a machete. To save her life, Pushkaran entered a house on the roadside but Ajaz followed her and poured petrol and set her on fire.
Pushpakaran reportedly died on the spot, but her body is yet to be taken to the hospital as forensic officials were at the spot to collect evidence.
The accused, posted with the Aluva traffic police team, suffered burn injuries and was taken into police custody soon after the attack. He has been admitted to the Alappuzha Medical College Hospital.
