As Mohanlal-starer Iruvar directed by Mani Ratnam is completing 25 years today since its initial release. Announcing the silver jubilee of the landmark film which showcased Mohanlal’s skill as an actor and perfectionist, the actor himself took to his official Instagram handle and penned a note on the movie. Mohanlal wrote, “Iruvar, One of the most enchanting experiences in my cinematic journey! #25 years of Iruvar.”
The theme of the movie was so delicate considering the personae whose lives the film was trying to portray and any mishandling could turn it into a huge political and cinematic tragedy. But the way the director and the actors performed in the movie turned it into a classic. If one takes 10 best movies produced in India, Iruvar will be one among them.
Mohanlal’s portrayal of MGR was one of the best in cinematic history. Prakash Raj as Karunanidhi and Aishwarya Rai as J Jayalalithaa also gave a scintillating performance. Another huge name in the crew of ‘Iruvar’ was the legend himself, AR Rahman, who composed the music in the film.
‘Iruvar’ was released on 14 January 1997. Initially it was said that Mammotty was supposed to play the role of Tamilselvan (M Karunanidhi). However, Mammooti could not make it due to some reasons. He continues to regret missing the chance, according to one of his Facebook posts posted at the time of Karunanidhi’s death. There are many Tamilians who are not happy with Aishwarya Rai as Jayalalithaa as she did not do justice to the role. Jayalalitha was a more powerful character, said a critic who doesn’t want to be named.
