The girl who complained to the police regarding the inhumane attitude of local CPM activists towards her family was arrested under epidemic law. The case is filed based on a report from the Health Department that states that she has violated surveillance guidelines.
Six activists of the CPI (M), which leads the LDF government in Kerala, were placed under suspension by the party for their inhumane attitude towards the family of a girl who is under home observation for COVID-19 in Pathanamthitta district. The incident show virus patients are stigmatized by the society even in a ‘literate’ state like Kerala.
In this case, on the receiving end of the ire of a section of the people was a girl hailing from Thannithode village in Pathanamthitta district who is doing her studies in Coimbatore.
She returned home from Coimbatore in the car of a friend’s father on May 17. Since then she has been under mandatory home observation.
A local WhatsApp group meanwhile spread rumours against the girl’s father alleging that he is roaming freely in the village. A threat was also issued against him with his photo on social media to identify and assault him. Following this, the girl brought this to the notice of chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan who recommended stringent action against the anti-social elements.
