There is no respite for the JD(S)-Congress coalition government in Karnataka as it continue to teeter on the brink of collapse on Tuesday. Rebels Congress and JD(S) members who resigned from the Assembly have not so far responded to the overtures of the Congress.
All the ministers in the government had quit Monday to give a free hand to Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy to reshuffle his Cabinet. as the action shifted to Goa from Mumbai after 13 dissident MLAs — 10 of the Congress and 3 of the JD(S) — submitted their resignations to the Assembly Speaker’s office on Saturday triggering a fresh political crisis.
According to media reports, of the 13 MLAs who resigned from the Assembly 10 were holed up in a luxury hotel in Mumbai since Saturday. They were joined by H Nagesh, one of the two Independent MLAs and a minister who quit, on Monday. All the legislators were headed to Goa by road.
Meanwhile, the BJP staged protests across Karnataka on Tuesday demanding resignation of Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy as his government has lost majority in the wake of mass resignations of lawmakers. A total of 14 Congress-JD-S legislators and two Ministers have resigned.
Of the 14 lawmakers who resigned, 11 belong to the Congress and three Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S). While 10 Congress MLAs resigned on July 6, one resigned on July 1.
