The union government has told Kerala that they cannot bear the burden of the loans of the flagship project, the Silver Line semi highspeed railway. Railway minister Ashwini Vaishnav informed Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan of the decision.
The K-Rail plans to borrow Rs 33,700 crore for the project. Vijayan told the minister that the state will look into the matter and see if it can bear the whole loan amount by itself.
The meeting, held to seek the final approval of the project, decided to hold further discussions. The union government had given an in-principle approval earlier. The meeting also discussed the doubts over the feasibility of the project.
Interestingly, the Kerala BJP has come out against the Silver Line project on Friday. State president K Surendran said that the party is against the project as it will cause serious damages to the environment. However, the chief minister had informed the Assembly that an environmental impact study of the Silver Line was conducted.
UDF is also against the project due to the financial burden it causes.
