The incident took place during the 2012 India tour of England, but was revealed now by the England player.
Cricket is a gentlemen’s game. But often during play, verbal arguments and abuses are common. Probably it is because sledging can also break the opponent’s confidence to gain the upper hand in the competition. Former England batsman Nick Copton tells the story of Sludge.
The English batsman narrated this episode while speaking on the Edges and Sledges Cricket Podcast. Compton also praised the Indian skipper saying, he is a “world-class performer”.
“I definitely got a few words from Virat Kohli during the series. I think I bumped into his ex-girlfriend at the time before the series when out for an evening with Kevin Pietersen and myself, Yuvraj Singh all of us were there, and she was there,” Compton said.
“I just chatted to her and the word got back that I was speaking to her, and I don’t think Virat Kohli was very happy with that. He had a few words to say to me every time I walked out to bat. But I think he was trying to say that she was his girlfriend, and she was saying that it was her ex-boyfriend. It was like, ‘Who’s got the story right here,’ you know what I mean?”
However, Compton mentioned that as usual everything was in a good mood and now when he recalls the incident he ends up smiling about it. Perhaps this is known as ‘Sportsman’s Spirit’. Nevertheless, we Indians know that Kohli is a gentleman!
