Blue Alert has been issued in Idukki following the rise in the dam’s water level. The action was taken as the water level inched closer towards the storage capacity of the Idukki dam. The current water level is at 2390.86 feet. The maximum storage capacity is 2403 feet. The KSEB officials have informed that there is no need for concern amidst the prevailing blue alert.
The orange alert will be declared only once the water level touches 2396 feet. The red alert is declared when the water level reaches 2397 feet. The shutters of the island are opened only when the water level of the dam reaches 2403 feet. The instruction issued by the Central Water Commission states that the blue alert must be declared at least 36 hours prior to this. The recent declaration of blue alert is a precautionary action taken as part of this.
Presently, there is no rain in the areas surrounding the dam. The flow of water is also low. Thus, it is hinted that the water level in the dam will not rise further. The Meteorological Center has informed that heavy rain is expected in Kerala for the next two days. Orange alert has been declared in Palakkad and Malappuram today. Yellow alert has been declared in all districts other than Kozhikode and Wayanad.
