Swapna Suresh, the key accused in a gold smuggling case also earned crores by acting as an intermediary in flood relief aid from the UAE, reports say. She has also agreed that she played a major role in projects between Kerala and the UAE in government and private enterprises.
One crore dirhams (approximately 20 crore rupees) was provided by a UAE NGO for housing in Kerala. However, Swapna testified that she recieved only Rs 1.38 crore as an intermediary. Though customs did not believe this, the probe team indicates that they might have hiiden a large sum of money before they were caught.
The MoU was signed by Kerala and NGO representatives in the presence of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. UAE Consul General Jamal Hussain Alzabi was also present on the occasion. It is believed that Swapna Suresh was the mediator. Earlier, Rs 1 crore and 1 kg of gold were found in Swapna’s bank locker.
Swapna Suresh has also revealed to Customs that the Consul General and Attache had received a similar share.
