Leader of Opposition in Maharashtra Legislative Assembly Devendra Fadnavis came down heavily on the State Government for asking Amitabh Gupta to resume his work. Indian Police Service Officer Gupta was the official who signed a letter, which permitted the Wadhawans – the accused in Yes Bank and DHFL fraud cases, to travel to Mahabaleshwar during lockdown.
Mr Fadnavis issued a statement in which he has said that it’s not possible for a bureaucrat to take such call without having support of top leadership. He has also demanded a CBI probe to find out the culprits in this case.
Amitabh Gupta, Principal Secretary in the Home Department was sent on compulsory leave for issuing permission letter to the Wadhawans. The letter signed by him allowed 23 members of Wadhawans’ family to travel during lockdown from Khandala to their guest house in Mahabaleshwar.
Following the incident, State Home Minister Anil Deshmukh had ordered a high-level probe into the matter, which was carried out by Additional Chief Secretary (Finance) Manoj Saunik and the report was submitted to the Home Ministry. The report concluded that he exceeded his jurisdiction. Later, the Wadhawan brothers were arrested by a Central Bureau of Investigation team from Mahabaleshwar in connection with the Yes Bank fraud case.
