With the spectrum auctions scheduled to begin in March, telecom companies and smartphone manufacturers promote 5G technology.
Consider the following. You are on your way to the hills. It is a ten-hour ride, and you want to kill time by watching films. Regardless, you neglected to download them. You can download them immediately; however, it will take some time to use a 4G phone. It will be different if you have 5G.
That will be possible within the next few months. India is finally set to put out 5G technology following years of conjecture. Compared to 4G LTE’s peak speed of 1GB per second, 5G technology supports data transfer rates of up to 20GB per second. The era of 4G will soon come to an end. The 5G spectrum auctions are scheduled to begin in March 2022 and conclude in August. Simultaneously, telecom providers like Jio, Airtel, and Vodafone-Idea are testing the technology.
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is currently in the last phases of consultation with the telecom industry over the 5G rollout. A final report on the timetables for 2022 will be provided in the coming weeks, followed by the start of the auction process. Large cities such as Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, and Bengaluru will be among the first places to receive 5G coverage in the initial phase.
Telecommunications companies in a hurry
While spectrum will be awarded in due time, telecom providers have begun conducting 5G experiments in several locations.
Airtel said in November 2021 that the Department of Telecommunications had allocated its test spectrum in different bands to assess 5G technology. Furthermore, in collaboration with Nokia, it performed India’s first 5G testing in the 700 MHz bands on the outskirts of Kolkata. Vodafone-Idea quickly followed Airtel and announced that it had achieved a 1.5 GBPS download speed as part of its current 5G trials in Pune and Gandhinagar. This was accomplished with the use of Ericsson’s 5G technology solutions.
Similarly, Reliance Jio is preparing to roll out 5G in 1,000 cities across the country. The company’s chairman said that the company had finished 5G network coverage planning for the country’s top 1,000 cities. According to data released during a speed test, Jio customers could download a two-hour movie in less than a minute.
Telecommunications firms must perform trials by May 2022. While Airtel and Vodafone Idea are conducting experiments collaborating with Nokia and Ericsson, respectively, Jio is conducting trials using its own indigenously created technologies.
Additionally, phone manufacturers are queuing up
Without a 5G device, having a 5G network is pointless. That is where the handset manufacturers step in. Smartphones are also being upgraded as part of the effort to establish a quicker mobile network.
Larger companies such as Samsung are also bolstering their portfolios to develop mid-range 5G phones for an India launch.
Reliance Industries, Mukesh Ambani Jio is also developing a 5G smartphone that will ship later this year. International smartphone makers such as Hong Kong’s Infinix have teamed with Jio to undertake trials and launch 5G phone models in India, using the company’s technical strength. Apple had already launched their 5G versions of gadgets in India. This includes cellphones and tablets.
To address the growing demand, brands such as Tecno, Vivo, Huawei, and Xiaomi have introduced 5G variants.
Currently, 5G smartphone models start at Rs 13,000. On the verge of change, the TRAI has produced a comprehensive consultation paper on 5G auctions, including the reserve price, bid methods, and other fees. As the country prepares for mega auctions, telecom corporations demand significant discounts in spectrum pricing of up to 90-95 per cent. Additionally, the corporations have requested adjustments to ensure no upfront payment and a five to six-year moratorium. TRAI has not yet responded to these inquiries.
While these difficulties will be smoothed out over the next few months of government-industry discussions, the 5G revolution is already underway. Not only will new technology enable quicker internet, but it will also aid in the development of smart cities and towns equipped with connected healthcare, more creative agricultural processes, and computerised education systems, thus taking Digitial India to new dimensions.
Once 5G-enabled technology pervades all products and services, the transition to a genuinely Digital India would be accelerated. Furthermore, this transformation is permanent.
