Technology plays an important role in our lives. After Covid-19 it is almost impossible to lead a life without it. But many scientific studies proved that overuse of technology, especially internet may increase the stress levels and the development of mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression. So it is necessary to take a break from the digital world means digital detox, which can help to stay mentally and emotionally healthy.A digital detox, also called as tech cleanse,is a period of time where we refrain from using our technical devices. It’s aim is to promote better mental well being and is considered as an important self -care strategy. The potential benefits of digital detox are better quality of sleep, improve focus, reduced stress level, social interactions with loved ones, and leisure time to spend on hobbies.Since we all use digital devices for essential purposes, it is not practical to stay away completely. However we can moderate the usage .Today many people are working from home. It created a blur between work and home as notifications from work emails/messages are popping up on the screen. Regularly checking the messages and notifications create a sense of always being online which may ultimately affect your mental health. So it is advised to adopt no usage of phone, lap top after 9 P.M or adopt a digital lock down once in a week, especially on off days.
Studies proved that the blue light emitted by screens of smart phones, lap tops, and other gadgets restrict the production of melatonin, the hormone which allows the body to prepare and relax for sleep. Sleep disturbances can intensify the symptoms of depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder. Hence not using screens for one hour before going to bed or keep your phones away from the bedroom ,is one of the best things you can do to care for your mental health. Moreover make a habit of No phones,No laptop works during lunch/dinner time. It will strengthen the relationships more. Also heavy usage of social media is harmful for mental health. Most people start their day by checking whatsapp messages/status,reading and replying not so necessary messages. This habit may later lead to FOMO(fear of missing out). FOMO refers to the feeling or perception that others are having more fun, living better lives, or experiencing better things than you are. It involves a deep sense of envy and affects self-esteem. Spending more time on Facebook & Instagram, scrolling through the feeds of others only stresses you out. So find ways to reduce social media use, such as setting time limits for social apps. Usually, we have a habit of googling everything. This habit will reduce our critical thinking skills and creativity. So place your gadgets away and think some time for new ideas. Through this digital detox, you can experience a significant improvement in your mental health.
On this World Mental Health Day, let us start with digital detox. A successful digital detox will create free time for alternative activities. Be in the real world of your own happy space.
