Malikappuram, helmed by Unni Mukundan, continues to do well at the box office. As the actor and production sources reported, the film’s global box office income has already surpassed Rs 100 crore. Considering its modest budget of Rs 3.5 crore, this year’s film is a smashing hit. In the present-day state of Malayalam film, entering the Rs 100-crore club in 40 days is no minor accomplishment. Much-hyped Shah Rukh Khan starer Pathan grossed less than Rs 5 crore.
On Wednesday, Unni resorted to social media to thank the fans and publish a post announcing that the film had entered the Rs 100 crore club. “Thank you very much to all family audiences and children for your support of our film. Thank you, Ayyappa, “The actor also thanked the whole crew of the film, which was directed by Vishnu Sasi Shankar and written by Abhilash Pillai.
So many alleged YouTube film critics paid by the infamous ‘Mattatncheri mafia’ have accused Unni Mukundan of selling devotion. No one labelled Nandanam, a 2002 Malayalam film directed by Ranjith that depicted the narrative of Balamani’s desire to visit Guruvayoorappan’s holy temple, as a “devotion selling ” film! The cast and crew of Nandanam, in which Prithviraj starred as the protagonist, never encountered a situation like this. In a way, both films deal with the subject of devotion. Malikappuram is the tale of Kalyani, an eight-year-old girl who desires to visit Lord Ayyappa in Sabarimala, a variant of Balamani who desires to meet Guruvayurappan in Nandanam.
During the initial pre-production phase of Malikappuram, Unnimukundan was not even considered for the lead role. The situation deteriorated to the point where Unni and the children were reprimanded for selling devotion in the name of movies. The resounding success of Malikappuram proved to be the most illustrative instance of a work receiving the acclaim it merits despite criticism from detractors.
A good film will triumph regardless of how hard you attempt to undermine it. This modest film surpassed the Pongal releases of Vijay and Ajith in Kerala. Now that the film has been released in Tamil Nadu, it has performed well commercially.
