In the bustling streets of Delhi, where life moves at a relentless pace, there exists a beacon of hope for those in need of essential medicines – the venerable figure known as “Medicine Baba.” At the age of 82, this compassionate individual has become a symbol of selfless service and a lifeline for countless people struggling to access vital medications.
Medicine Baba, whose real name is Omkar Nath Sharma, embarked on his humanitarian journey over a decade ago. Witnessing the struggles of the less fortunate to afford necessary medicines, he was stirred into action. What began as a personal mission has now transformed into a city-wide effort to bridge the gap between medical accessibility and those facing financial constraints.
40% of India’s population doesn’t have access to modern medicine because they are costly or because government hospitals don’t have them in stock. And 45% of the 1.6 lakh crores in pharmaceuticals that India produces is exported each year! Moreover, since demonetisation in India, there is news of people dying because hospitals are refusing treatment, not accepting old currency notes, and banks and ATMs are out of cash. In such a time, it’s amazing how selflessly Medicine Baba had tried to turn things around.
Medicine Baba’s daily routine involves traversing the streets and alleyways of Delhi, armed with a large sack and an unwavering determination to help those in need. He knocks on doors, visits hospitals, and connects with medical facilities, collecting unused or surplus medications. These can be anything from pain relievers and antibiotics to chronic disease medications – all carefully sorted and cataloged for redistribution.
One of the unique aspects of Medicine Baba’s mission is the utilization of surplus medication. Often, individuals discard medicines that are still viable, and this surplus can be a lifeline for someone else. By repurposing these unused drugs, Medicine Baba not only prevents wastage but also extends a helping hand to those who cannot afford to purchase medicines regularly.
While many choose to enjoy a retired life, this retired blood bank technician roams Delhi’s streets collecting medicines for the needy. Omkar Nath Sharma, an octogenarian with the energy of a teenager, got his calling when in October 2008, a portion of Delhi Metro bridge collapsed in East Delhi’s Laxmi Nagar area. He was shaken by the fact that many of those who were injured could not afford medicines.
He has saved numerous lives since then and works tirelessly for the ones who have no other ray of hope. He has a unique way of going about the collection of medicines. Sharma’s ‘uniform’ consists of a brightly coloured kurta on which his contact details are printed. His day starts at 7 AM and he goes on rounds in colonies with his medicine ‘jhola’.
Delhi’s Medicine Baba acts as a bridge, connecting those with excess medicines to those in desperate need. His efforts have not only provided tangible relief to countless individuals but have also highlighted the stark disparities in healthcare accessibility. In a city where economic gaps can translate into life-altering consequences for the less privileged, Medicine Baba stands as a testament to the transformative power of compassion.
Over the years, Medicine Baba’s work has garnered attention and support from various quarters. Local communities, healthcare professionals, and NGOs have recognized the impact of his mission. However, the humble Medicine Baba remains dedicated to his cause, prioritizing the well-being of others over personal recognition.
He lives in Uttam Nagar, his first collection centre is Punjabi Bagh crematorium where a box is kept for people to donate medicines. Sharma then goes around Delhi, increasing awareness about this noble cause.
Delhi’s Medicine Baba serves as an inspiration for both the young and old, urging us to rethink our approach to healthcare accessibility. His story challenges us to consider the potential impact of small, individual efforts in collectively addressing larger societal issues.
In a city marked by its fast-paced lifestyle and economic disparities, Medicine Baba’s compassionate mission resonates as a powerful reminder that, even in the midst of chaos, humanity and kindness can thrive. As he continues his tireless journey, Medicine Baba remains a living testament to the transformative impact one person can have on the lives of many.
