Kodancherry in Kozhikode underwent a shocking incident recently. A foetus was killed when CPM branch secretary Thettalil Thampi and six other CPM leaders allegedly attacked Jyolsna, a pregnant woman, her husband Sibi Chacko and two children on January 28. Their neighbour Prajeesh was also in the team of assailants. The woman was kicked in her abdomen and was manhandled when she tried to intervene as the assailants attacked her husband. As a result of the attack, she started bleeding acutely and was immediately taken to Kozhikode Medical College. However, the four-month-old foetus died on February 3.
Even though Kodancherry Police registered a case against seven CPM men, they did only arrest Prajeesh. Since all of them belonged to CPM, police were too keen to protect them. But, since the victim’s family staged a hunger strike in front of the Kodancherry Police Station demanding the arrest of the entire team, the police took the action at last, but reluctantly.
Sibi Chacko told the media that police told him, they would take actions if he (Sibi) agrees to remove Thampi’s name from the list of the accused. The accused are charged under IPC 316 (causing the death of a quick unborn child by act amounting to culpable homicide) also with 143, 147 and 447.
