Sri Rajeshwari temple at Kalyathra in Venmony, Alappuzha, run by the Nair Service Society (NSS), was attacked by a group of goons belonging to CPI(M) youth wing DYFI on Wednesday night. They also assaulted four persons who were standing inside the temple. The goons threw soda and beer bottles and stones at the temple. The DYFI goons, who were taking out a march, also shouted provocative slogans against NSS and RSS-BJP.
The attack should be viewed in light of a series of attacks on properties owned by NSS. This is seen as a move to threaten the organisation which has been opposing Left Front government’s Sabarimala policy of forcibly taking young women to Sabarimala violating the traditions. Despite threats and coercive persuasions, the NSS did not change its stance and stood solidly behind the devotees who were fighting to protect the traditions in Sabarimala.
Locals told Indus Scrolls that those who mounted attack on the temple were Christian and Muslim leaders of the outfit. The hartal called by NSS passed off peacefully. BJP and Congress leaders condemned the attack on the temple. Leaders of the NSS also condemned the attack. A large number of devotees, a majority of them women, took out a protest against the attack.
The NSS leadership also condemned a series of attacks on NSS institutions. In Kadambanad, miscreants suspected to be CPI(M) goons destroyed a flagpost and placed a wreath in the name of NSS chief Sukumaran Nair.
