The Trump administration has imposed tough restrictions on Chinese journalists working in the United States since. The US Department of Homeland Security has announced on May 8 that Chinese journalists working for non-US media outlets would be restricted to 90-day work visas. They will be permitted to apply for extensions up to 90 days.
China is upset with the new restrictions imposed by the US. Earlier, Chinese journalists were issued media (I) visa by the US. Although it was single-entry, it was very convenient as it was open-ended. The new regulation has upset that causing much inconvenience to Chinese journalists.
According to Global Times, the official media outlet of China, the new regulation stipulates that Chinese journalists’ duration of stay in the US shall not exceed 90 days from May 8. Anyone, who intends to apply for an extension of stay, must submit an application form designated by the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). The application cost for extension is $455.
“Americans attach importance to equality. DHS expressed its dissatisfaction with Chinese actions against US journalists working in China. China offers one-year multiple entry visas to resident foreign journalists operating in the country, including those from the US. This provision is way far better than the US visa to Chinese correspondents. The arbitrariness and arrogance of the US administration have reached an unprecedented level,” states Global Times article.
US can cut off whole ties with China: Trump
In a strongly worded statement, Trump has said he “could cut off the whole relationship” with China, the media reported. “There are many things we could do,” Trump told Fox Business on Thursday, adding: “We could cut off the whole relationship.”
Trump is leaving no chance to punish China. The US administration has been mulling over ways to seek financial compensation from China for mishandling of coronavirus pandemic. Recently, the US cut investment ties between US federal retirement funds and Chinese equities. “Now, if you did, what would happen? You’d save $500 billion if you cut off the whole relationship,” Trump told Fox Business. Trump also said he doesn’t want to meet his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping.
