Chief of Defence Staff Gen Bipin Rawat died in a chopper accident on Wednesday. He was the first CDS of India.
Bipin Rawat was born in Uttarakhand’s Pauri. After his school education from Shimla, he joined National Defense Academy. Upon the completion of the course, he was inducted into the Indian Military Academy.
He joined the 11 Gorkha Rifles’ fifth battalion in 1978. In the span of his 40 year-long illustrious service, he spent ten years conducting counter-insurgency operations. He has a commendable track record in high-altitude warfare. Rawat has commanded his subordinates along the eastern sector of Line of Actual Control (LAC), Kashmir Valley, Eastern Command (Headquartered in Kolkata) and Southern Command (Headquartered in Pune). From the second lieutenant rank in 1978 he rose to become 1st Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) of the Indian Army in the year 2019.
It was in 2016 that Rawat became the Chief of Army Staff, after being appointed as the Vice Chief of the Army Staff in the same year. On the academic front, he has produced and published many articles on topics like national security and leadership. He has researched on military media and computer studies. He has received prestigious awards like Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Uttam Yudh Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, Yudh Seva Medal, Vishisht Seva Medal.
