As per latest reports, the United States said Russia has sought military assistance from China as part of intensifying their attack in Ukraine. However, it is not clear what kind of weapons Russia demanded. Reports said Russia has also asked for financial assistance to counter-sanctions imposed by Western countries.
The services of Visa and MasterCard have stopped in Russia. Following this, reports said Russian banks are in talks with Chinese banks over the possibility of issuing co-badge cards made by the Chinese government-owned UnionPay and Russia’s Mir for international transactions. However, Liu Pengui, a spokesman for the Chinese embassy in the United States, denied reports that Russia is buying weapons.
Meantime, US’ National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said they were communicating directly, privately to Beijing that there will absolutely be consequences for large-scale sanctions evasion efforts or support to Russia to backfill them. The United States has warned of possible repercussions ahead of a meeting with Chinese National Security Adviser Yang Jiechi this week.
