72 migrant workers from Uttar Pradesh who were on their way back home from Kerala on a goods lorry were nabbed by Tamil Nadu police and sent back. These migrant workers had arrived in Ernakulam before lockdown for selling woollen blankets.
They had crossed Nilambur, Vazhikkadavu, Nadukani check-post and were nabbed from Kammanahalli near Karnataka border by Masinagudi police.
These workers had been stranded in Alappuzha for the past 40 days. They had hitch-hiked on the goods lorry while they set out walking to their native place. The driver promised to take them to Mysuru. The Rajasthan registration vehicle had passed two check-posts in Kerala and one in Tamil Nadu before it was seized.
The matter was brought to the attention of the Niligiri Collector and police superintendent. Gudalur RDO K Rajkumar, Tahsildar Sangeetha Rani and DySP Jaisingh questioned the migrant workers.
After providing food, they were sent back to Ernakulam by a Tamil Nadu state transport bus.
The lorry and driver have been taken under custody for violating lockdown norms.
