As many as 27 people have died in Maharashtra due to floods in five districts of Pune division while more than two lakh people have been evacuated to safer places from three districts of Kolhapur, Sangli, and Satara. More than 2 lakh people have been evacuated to safe places till now from 3 districts including Kolhapur, Sangli, and Satara, officials said.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) Mumbai said that there is a very likely enhancement of rainfall over parts of Konkan and central Maharashtra over the next two days. Twenty-two rescue teams are deployed in Kolhapur, comprising five teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), 14 of the Indian Navy, and one each of Coastguard, Army column and State Disaster Response Force.
Several regions of Karnataka was put on high alert after weather authorities in the state warned of heavy downpour especially around the coast, Malnad and south Karnataka. Reports of floods, landslides and instances of roads caving forcing authorities to cancel public bus services and even some trains.
There were signs of relief in North Karnataka on Thursday after days of flooding as the water level in major rivers began to recede, however, heavy rain continued to pound Malnad and coastal Karnataka, forcing many to move out of homes.
Nearly 44,000 people have been evacuated to safety so far. More than 90 people were moved from 13 villages in Kodagu district as water entered homes. National and state disaster response forces are continuing their operations.
As heavy rain continues in Kerala killing 8 people, red alert has been issued for four districts in the state. A number of villages have submerged and isolated from the rest of the state. Schools and colleges are shut in all 14 districts of the southern state today, except state capital Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam. Massive landslides are being reported from a number of regions.
315 flood relief camps have been opened across the state hosting 22,165 persons from 5936 families. Flight operations at Cochin international airport have been suspended till Sunday as floodwaters engulfed the parking area. Yesterday, flight operations were suspended for four hours till midnight as a precautionary measure in view of heavy rains.
