The Madras High Court has asked the Tamil Nadu government to explain the status of 47,000 acres of missing temple land in the state.
A division bench of Justice N Kirubakaran and Justice TV Tamilselvi questioned the government while considering cases related to the land of Arulmiga Avinashiappar and Arulmiga Subramanyasamy temples in Sulur.
According to the 1984-85 census, Hindu temples in the state owned 5.25 lakh acres of land. But in the record of 2019-20, it was reduced to 4.78 lakh acres. The court observed that 47,000 acres of land owned by temples had been missing for 35 years.
The court directed the government to submit an affidavit containing details and survey numbers by July 5. The government will have to explain in the affidavit the survey numbers of the lands mentioned in the 1984-85 record and the survey numbers of the lands mentioned in the latest record and which lands have been excluded from the records.
