The Indian Railway has converted 358 passenger trains including 10 trains in Kerala into express trains. With this new move, the ticket fare would double and the number of halts would be decreased.
The union ministry has decided to implement this reformation once the train service becomes normal in the country.
The ministry has examined that the operation of passenger trains is not profitable while considering the privatisation of railways. Hence, the railway has decided to convert passenger trains into express and express trains into superfast.
With this, 47 trains in south-central railways, 43 in north-western railways, 36 each in south-eastern railways and southern railways will be converted.
As per the order, the conversion of trains will be in force with the next revision of the time table. Usually, the railway revises the schedule in July. But this year, the new time table was not introduced due to the COVID crisis.
At present, only special train services are being operated.
