The Aluva Rural Crime Branch has arrested two men for allegedly extorting Rs 2.5 crore from a woman by promising her husband release from jail. Defendants allegedly extorted money from Anisha by promising to release her husband, who was imprisoned in Qatar.
Aneesha, a native of Muvattupuzha, had lodged a complaint with the Chief Minister. Mohammad Aslam Moulavi from Muvattupuzha Payipra and Bijli Mohammad from Kanjirapally were arrested.
Aneesha’s husband, a contractor in Qatar, has been jailed after the Gulf countries imposed sanctions on her. In 2018, Aneesha collected Rs 1.5 crore at various stages to release her husband and gave it to the accused.
The complaint was lodged with the Chief Minister last year. Defendants allege that she spent money to travel to Qatar several times and handed over money to several people to get Anisha’s husband released. The accused were arrested under the leadership of Aluva Crime Branch DySP Rajiv.
The accused were remanded till the 27th.
