Kummanam Rajasekharan, the BJP candidate for Thiruvananthapuram Lok Sabha constituency, is known for his selfless service. He left a government job to become a pracharak of RSS.
Kummanam is pitted against flamboyant Congress leader Shashi Tharoor. Opinion polls suggest Kummanam’s victory.
A humanist, he is many things rolled into one: a journalist, social worker, pracharak, politician, able organizer. He has successfully run many social and political campaigns in the state.
He is an environmentalist who led a movement against destruction of eco-sensitive areas of Pathanamthitta.
Kummanam established more than ten orphanages in Kerala when he was chief of VHP in the state.
As state BJP president he energized the cadre.
He donated his entire salary he got as Mizoram Governor to social work.
As Governor he took up many social service projects in Mizoram. Most of his discretionary funds as Governor were given to orphanages and girl child education.
Initially some Mizo Christian groups opposed his appointment.
But when he left he was given an emotional send off by locals.
