Four more accused in gold smuggling case were taken into preventive custody on charges of Conservation of Foreign Exchange and Prevention of Smuggling Activities (COFEPOSA) here on Wednesday.
First accused Sarith, second accused KT Ramees, fifth accused Jalal and sixth accused Shafi were placed under the preventive custody.
The central government approved the Customs’ request and issued an order regarding this.
Central Economic Intelligence Bureau issued the order of preventive detention observing that if the accused get released it will destabilise the economic situation in the country.
On the other day, Customs officials visited Viyyur jail where the accused are housed and handed over the order to jail superintendent.
Following the order, the accused will be shifted to Poojapura central jail on Wednesday. With this, the four will be lodged in the jail for a year without bail.
Earlier, Swapna Suresh and Sandeep, key accused in the gold smuggling case were also sent to preventive custody.
Now, six of the accused in the case are placed under preventive custody.
