The four convicts in the Nirbhaya gangrape case are set to be hanged at 5:30 tomorrow morning after a Delhi Court dismissed their petitions seeking a stay on their execution. Rejecting the petitions of convicts Akshay Kumar, Pawan Gupta, Vinay Sharma and Mukesh Singh today, the Additional Sessions Judge Dharmender Rana said there was no valid ground for the stay on execution.
The Supreme Court also rejected the plea of convict Akshay Kumar today challenging the rejection of his second mercy petition by the President. The three-judge bench said that no ground for judicial review of the President’s decision was made out in the plea.
After the pronouncement of the order, Nirbhaya’s mother said her daughter’s soul will now rest in peace. Six people, including a juvenile, were named as accused in the Nirbhaya gangrape and murder case. Ram Singh, the sixth accused, allegedly committed suicide in the Tihar Jail days after the trial began. The juvenile accused was released in 2015 after spending three years in a correctional home.
