The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has launched an inquiry into allegations that two CPM ministers in the Left government had acquired 200 acres of land in Maharashtra under benami names with the help of a recently retired IAS officer. The probe is against ministers of key departments.
The probe into the ministers’ benami deal comes at a time when the government and the CPM are staging strong resistance against the central investigation agencies by accusing the Centre of using the agencies to stifle the development of the state. This will pave the way for another upheaval in the state politics with the Congress and the BJP taking up the issue.
According to sources, the ED has received information that a minister has kept the land registration documents in a locker in his wife’s name. The agency has identified the Kannur-native benami and he will be questioned soon. The land is said to be in Dodamarg taluk of Sindhudurg district. ED is collecting land registration information from the region.
