The Customs department has sought details from the Kerala government regarding the places where dates, imported from UAE, were distributed. The Customs department sent a notice to the Social Justice Department in this regard, reports Mathrubhumi News.
17,000 kg of dates fruit was imported to the state via diplomatic channels. After several political allegations were raised regarding this, It was revealed that the dates were distributed to special schools. Based on this information, the Customs department sent a notice to the Social Justice Department.
Customs has sought details regarding the list of schools to which these dates were distributed, areas in which these schools are located and how the dates were distributed. The Social Justice Department has started collecting details regarding dates distribution after receiving the notice.
Customs had demanded copies of the certificates submitted by the UAE Consulate for tax reduction from the GIT political department, in connection with the gold smuggling case. As per this, the certificates were handed over to Customs. The details regarding the 17,000 kg of dates were also included in this.
In the certificate submitted for tax reduction, the UAE consulate had informed that the dates were imported for the Consulate. However, it is against the protocol to distribute items outside the consulate, for which tax reduction was secured.
However, only the External Affairs Ministry has the authority to take action in this regard.
