When another hartal takes its toll in the goons’ own state of Kerala, across the streets there is an intriguing imagery that would capture the attention of a passerby– the image of MK Gandhi smiling, printed in multiple colours as celebrated by the youth wing of Communist Party of India (Marxist) DYFI on his death anniversary. It is not new, but the latest example of how communists who lose the very base in the state, using historic figures to validate themselves.
“They (the CPIM goons) slashed their legs first to prevent them from running away from the scene. This is the method they follow for killing. After ensuring the first one is finished, they came back to the other to finish him too.” When the local describes the recent twin murder of Congressmen at Kasaragod, Kerala, the description says it all – how ruthless the terror party could act for finishing their political opponent!
It was in the wee hours of the night of February 17, two Youth Congress workers, Sharath Lal and Kripesh, brutally murdered at Periya in Kasaragod. An investigation by the department of police, which has proven to be merely an instrument in the hands of the ruling party, is on; when the official reports come, Peethambaran, a local committee member of CPI(M), the mastermind behind the heinous murder and two others are in the custody of the police.
Although the Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and the CPI(M) leadership hesitated to speak on the murder, they were forced, this time just because the parliament elections are on the doorstep. “He will not commit a crime without necessary direction from the party,” says Manju, wife of Peethambaran the main accused in the coldblooded murder. “It is just to protect the face of the party during the parliament elections,” his daughter says while reacting to the news of the dismissal of Peethambaran from the party.
Unlike other similar incidents, the accused are already in the police custody, however, everyone knows the possible outcome. While the merit of a party worker is evaluated with the murders he has planned and carried out, no doubt, soon these criminals will come out of the iron bars, probably with a promotion as a district committee member. The luxuries that the CPI(M) criminals receive within the jail has already been discussed widely even by the High Court of Kerala. But who bothers?!
No doubt, the recent political murder, while bringing misfortune to CPI(M) during the upcoming Parliament polls, would certainly help the deceptive congressmen to gather a few more votes. Ultimately, it is a bitter truth that the governments in Kerala, so far, are the results of mutual understanding between the Leftist and the Rightist parties. Only an alternative alliance could bring at least a ray of hope in the lives of people in the state. Nevertheless, we don’t know when the terror-struck state would witness such dawn!
