Cases of domestic violence are on the rise world over ever since most of the countries enforcing lockdowns forcing couples to stay together indoors for long. Many social scientists warn that after lockdowns are lifted many countries will witness spurt in divorce cases.
To help couples who are finding it difficult to put up in one place, one Japanese hospitality firm is stepping in to help them save their marriages before it is too late. The Tokyo-based firm, Kasoku, offers couples a breather from each other till the lockdown is in force, according to The Japan Times website.
The company provides fully furnished rooms with WiFi. The customers can work from the room. A room costs ¥4,400 (approximately Rs 3,200) per night including tax, while the monthly fee starts at ¥90,000 (Rs 64,000).
Kasoku offers short-term rental units to couples who desperately want to have their space. Kosuke Amano, the spokesperson of the company, told the media outlet: “The goal is to avoid divorce. We hope couples first distance themselves and think about (their marriage). For our part, we will provide rooms that they can live in and an environment for teleworking.”
Japan declared nationwide lockdown on April 16, further expanding the coverage of the prior declaration covering Tokyo and six other prefectures. It is unlikely that the lockdown will be lifted anytime soon.

The company says more than 20 people have booked their facility for a month so far. The company is hopeful that it would get good response (with 100 people making enquiries), as many couples expressed their desire to stay separately through social media. For instance, a woman tweeted: “My husband lacks a sense of urgency, and I am dismayed. I don’t want to be with someone with that kind of mindset. It’s corona divorce.”
