A migrant worker from West Bengal who was brutalized by a group of people on the suspicion that he stole a rooster in Kollam district, Kerala, succumbed to his injuries on Sunday. The news report of the incident which took place on June 24 did not gain much traction in the nation media due to three reasons – 1) the victim was not a Muslim, 2) the death not linked to cow, 3) it happened in a state ruled by a secular combine.
The police also did their bit to play down the incident — arrested only two persons. According to the police, after the death of the man, a case of murder was registered against the duo. One of the accused Ashraf surrendered before the police.
Manik Roy, 34, recently advised a CT scan after he complained of pain, died on Sunday while he was on way to a hospital, police said.
According to police, Roy was working as a helper of a mason at nearby Anchal for the past three years.
On June 24, he was walking home after purchasing a rooster when two men stopped him and asked if it had been stolen as cases of such theft had been reported in the area.
Roy was admitted to a hospital on June 24 and discharged the next day, police said.
Though he started going for work, he complained of pain and on July 14 and he was again taken to a hospital where a CT scan of the head was advised.
