Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said that the controversial amendment of the Kerala Police Act will not be implemented. It has been withdrawn, the chief minister said.
The CM added that further procedures will be decided after discussion in State Legislative Assembly.
An amendment to the Kerala Police Act 2011 to give police more power to prosecute persons who exploit various social media platforms to slander or insult or defame fellow citizens was introduced with a new provision and this invited wide criticism from all circles.
Meanwhile, leader of Opposition Ramesh Chennithala termed Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayn’s stance that the Police Act amendment ordinance will not be implemented, a bluff.
The Congress leader also demanded that the ordinance, introduced to silence media and political critics, must be repealed.
Once the Governor signs an ordinance, it becomes Law of the land. Once a law comes into force, nobody, including the CM can refrain from implementing it. Pinarayi Vijayan’s statement that the act will not be implemented is a bluff.
